2. Get lost in the traboules of Vieux-Lyon
Vieux-Lyon is the largest Renaissance district in Europe after Venice, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its visit is 100% free. The traboules – those secret passages running through buildings to connect two streets – are the district's number one attraction. There are around 500 in the city, with about forty open to the public in Vieux-Lyon.
Push open the carriage gates marked with the traboule symbol, cross the Renaissance interior courtyards with their arcaded galleries and spiral staircases, and emerge into a completely different street. It's a genuinely free outdoor treasure hunt. Start with the Longue Traboule (Lyon's longest, crossing 4 successive courtyards between 54 rue Saint-Jean and 27 rue du Boeuf) and follow your curiosity.
Vieux-Lyon also offers the Saint-Jean cathedral (free entry, 14th-century astronomical clock not to be missed), the colourful facades of Rue du Boeuf, and the lively terrace atmosphere of Place Saint-Paul. Even Lyonnais who think they know the district by heart still discover hidden courtyards and passages they've never walked through. That's the magic of this neighbourhood: it reveals itself a little more with every visit.
3. Climb to Fourvière for the view (and the basilica)
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is free, and the view from its esplanade is one of the most spectacular in Lyon. On a clear day, you can see Mont Blanc. The interior of the basilica is a masterpiece of golden mosaics, polychrome marble and stained glass that rivals the finest churches in Europe. It's free, open every day and absolutely breathtaking.
Our tip: take the funicular up (standard TCL ticket) and walk back down through the Jardin du Rosaire, a leafy path with magnificent views of the city. Allow 15 minutes for a leisurely descent down to Vieux-Lyon.
4. Stroll through Parc de la Tête d'Or
117 hectares of greenery in the heart of Lyon, a lake, a rose garden with 3,000 varieties, a botanical garden, tropical greenhouses and a zoo. All completely free. Parc de la Tête d'Or is Lyon's green lung and the favourite spot of locals at the weekend.
The zoo (free) is home to giraffes, elephants, crocodiles, flamingos and an African plain. The international rose garden is a spectacular sight in spring and summer. The tropical greenhouses of the botanical garden take you on a trip to the tropics without leaving Lyon. And for sporty visitors, the lake circuit is 3.4 km: perfect for a Sunday jog. In short, it's the kind of place where you can spend an entire day without spending a penny.
5. Go on a mural hunt
Lyon is the European capital of trompe-l'oeil and has over 150 frescoes and painted walls across the city. The most famous: the Fresque des Lyonnais (Quai Saint-Vincent, 30 iconic figures on 800 m²), the Fresque des Canuts (the largest in Europe, 1,200 m² at the top of Croix-Rousse), the Wall of Writers and the Wall of Cinema. All free and visible from the street.
Make it a treasure hunt: start with the Fresque des Lyonnais in the Presqu'île, climb to Croix-Rousse for the Fresque des Canuts, come back down through the slopes to discover street art hidden in the lanes. Take time to compare the murals with the real surroundings: the trompe-l'oeil is so convincing that it sometimes takes a moment to distinguish the painting from the real facade. 6. Travel back in time at the Gallo-Roman Theatre
The ancient theatre of Fourvière dates from the 1st century BC: it's one of the oldest theatres in France. Free entry, magical setting and timeless atmosphere. Sitting on the tiers on a Sunday afternoon, with views of the city below, is the kind of suspended moment only Lyon can offer. Right next door, the Lugdunum museum traces the history of Roman Lyon (free for under-18s).
In summer, the theatre hosts the Nuits de Fourvière festival, one of France's largest performing arts festivals: music, theatre, dance and circus in an open-air ancient setting, it's absolutely magical. Some shows are pay-what-you-can or free. The site also includes a small covered odeon right next door, often less crowded and equally impressive.
7. Wander the slopes of la Croix-Rousse
The Croix-Rousse neighbourhood is the village within the city. Formerly home to the canuts (silk weavers), it retains a bohemian soul with its traboules, independent designer shops, local cafés and murals. Climbing through the slopes is a free and refreshing walk, with magnificent views over the Presqu'île at every turn.
Don't miss the Maison des Canuts to understand the history of Lyonnais silk, nor the Sunday morning market on the boulevard (one of Lyon's largest: fruit, vegetables, cheese, flowers, flea market). The walk through the slopes is also an opportunity to discover the contemporary art galleries on Rue de Burdeau, all with free entry.
8. Walk along the banks of the Rhône
The banks of the Rhône have been completely redesigned as a pedestrian and cycling promenade, and they've become one of Lyon's most pleasant spots. Over 5 km, from Parc de la Tête d'Or to the Gerland district, you alternate between green spaces, free-access sports courts (basketball, football, pétanque), floating gardens and bar terraces. It's the gathering place for Lyonnais who want a jog, a bike ride or a sunset aperitif.
In summer, the riverbanks become an open-air festival with free concerts, sporting events and a festive atmosphere lasting until nightfall. 9. Admire the architecture of the Confluence district
The former industrial district transformed into a showcase of modern Lyon. A walk through Confluence is free and spectacular: the Cube Orange building, Jean Nouvel's Ycone residence, the Musée des Confluences (whose roof is accessible for free for the panoramic view), the nautical marina and waterside promenades. It's an incredible photography spot and a concentration of contemporary architecture in the open air.
At weekends, the district comes alive with families strolling along the marina, runners doing their lap around the point, and design enthusiasts spotting the boldest architectural details. La Sucrière, a former factory converted into an exhibition space, regularly hosts events and pop-up markets. And simply watching the Rhône and Saône meet at the tip of the Presqu'île is a free and fascinating natural spectacle.
10. Visit La Demeure du Chaos: the most extraordinary art museum in the region
La Demeure du Chaos (also known as the Organe Museum of Contemporary Art) is an absolutely mind-bending place: 9,000 m² of open-air contemporary art combining monumental sculptures, apocalyptic frescoes, provocative installations and poetic ruins. It's the kind of place you won't find anywhere else. Located in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or, 15 minutes from Lyon, entry is free at weekends.
The universe created by artist Thierry Ehrmann is simultaneously fascinating, unsettling and deeply original. You'll either love it or hate it, but you'll never remain indifferent. It's one of the finest hidden gems in the Lyon region, and the fact that it's free makes the visit even more unmissable.
The site extends across a private property transformed into a total work of art: wrecked cars, sliced-up helicopters, monumental statues, political messages painted on walls… Every corner holds a surprise. 11. Escape to Île Barbe
Right in the heart of the 9th arrondissement, Île Barbe is a little patch of countryside floating on the Saône. This ancient monastic island, home in the Middle Ages to one of Lyon's most powerful abbeys, now offers a green and peaceful setting just minutes from the city centre. The ruins of the Romanesque abbey, the tree-filled gardens and the Saône riverbanks make for a refreshing and completely free walk.
Accessible on foot or by bike from the Quai de Saône (take the Pont de l'Île Barbe), it's the ideal spot for a Sunday picnic away from the urban hustle. And the feeling of leaving the city while still being in it is priceless.
The island is small (you can walk around it in 30 minutes), but the atmosphere is unique: old houses with gardens running down to the Saône, the ruins of the Romanesque abbey with its 11th-century church, and a surprising silence for somewhere so close to the city centre. In summer, the Saône banks around the island are a popular local swimming spot. It's the countryside in the city, and it's free.
12. Explore the botanical garden and its tropical greenhouses
Located in Parc de la Tête d'Or, Lyon's Botanical Garden is one of the most important in France with over 15,000 plant species. Its large tropical greenhouses, recently renovated, transport you to the tropics in the heart of Lyon: palm trees, orchids, giant water lilies, carnivorous plants… Entry is free and the visit takes about 1 hour. It's a mini world tour of botanical wonders, without leaving the 6th arrondissement.
13. Browse the Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse (and taste for free)
Well, the Halles themselves aren't free as such. But strolling between the stalls is free, the atmosphere is incredible and the samples offered by traders (cheese, charcuterie, chocolate…) let you discover Lyonnais gastronomy without necessarily reaching for your wallet.
Regulars have their rituals: a stop at the cheesemonger to try the Saint-Marcellin, a look at the charcutier's rosettes and Lyon sausages, a pause in front of the fresh fish displays and a detour by the chocolatier for a complimentary praline. And if you do buy something (which is inevitable), the quality is exceptional. The Halles are also an excellent starting point for a picnic at Parc de la Tête d'Or: do your shopping in the morning and lunch on the grass in the afternoon.

14. Visit the art galleries on Rue de Burdeau
At the foot of the Croix-Rousse slopes, Rue de Burdeau has become a major contemporary art hub in Lyon. Around a dozen galleries, all with free entry, exhibit photography, painting, sculpture and installations. Galerie Le Réverbère, an institution present for over 30 years, is unmissable. It's perfect for a free and culturally rich walk, away from traditional museums.
The galleries on Rue de Burdeau change their exhibitions regularly, making it a place of constant discovery on every visit. The neighbourhood atmosphere adds to the charm: small cafés, independent bookshops, designers' studios… This is the artsy, hip side of Lyon, all accessible without spending a penny. Vernissages, often on Thursday evenings, are open to all and include a glass of wine.
15. Chill at Parc Sergent Blandan
A former military fort converted into an urban park, Parc Sergent Blandan is one of Lyon's newest and most original green spaces. 17 hectares right in the heart of the 7th arrondissement with play areas, a skate park, free-access sports courts, shared gardens and an associative bar. The perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon with friends, away from the crowds of Parc de la Tête d'Or.
What makes Blandan unique is the mix between preserved military architecture (the ramparts, the former barracks) and modern amenities (lawns, children's play equipment, sports facilities). It's also a living space with regular events: markets, open-air concerts, workshops.

16. Cross Place Bellecour
It's a classic, but have you really looked at it? Place Bellecour is the largest pedestrian square in Europe (62,000 m²). At its centre, the equestrian statue of Louis XIV. In the background, the hill of Fourvière and its basilica. It's the ideal starting point for all your Lyon walks, and the classic photo of the statue with Fourvière behind is a must. Take time to spot the small statue of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and the Little Prince, hidden at the south-west corner of the square.
The square also regularly hosts free events: the big wheel in winter, pop-up markets, sporting and cultural events throughout the year. It's the beating heart of Lyon, and simply crossing it while taking in your surroundings is an activity in itself. The ONLYLYON tourist office, located right in the middle of the square, can also provide maps and ideas for free walks.
17. Walk through the Croix-Rousse "soft mobility" tunnel
The Croix-Rousse "soft mobility" tunnel is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, and its walls are covered with interactive projected murals that change with the seasons. It's a free visual and sensory experience, unique in France, that transforms a simple underpass into an immersive art gallery. The crossing takes about 10 minutes and is well worth the detour.
The projections evolve throughout the year: enchanted forests, underwater scenes, constellations, Lyonnais scenes… Every visit is a surprise, and children love it. The tunnel connects the Presqu'île to the Vaise district, and is also a useful shortcut for cyclists.
18. Climb onto the roof of the Musée des Confluences
The Musée des Confluences is paid entry, but access to its panoramic roof is free. And the view is worth the trip: the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, the hills of Fourvière and Croix-Rousse, the Confluence district below… It's one of Lyon's best viewpoints, and it costs nothing. The museum is also free for under-18s and students aged 18 to 25.

19. Cycle the Voies Lyonnaises
The Voies Lyonnaises are the new wide, safe cycling lanes crossing the metropolitan area. They let you rediscover Lyon by bike in ideal conditions: from north to south, passing along the banks of the Rhône, the Doua campus, the banks of the Saône… It's free (if you have a bike or a Vélo'v subscription), sporty and eco-friendly!
For those without a bike, the city's Vélo'v bike-share service offers bikes at very low cost (the first 30 minutes are free with a subscription). Several routes are particularly enjoyable: the one along the Rhône from Parc de la Tête d'Or to Gerland, the one following the Saône from Île Barbe to Confluence, and the new sections linking the eastern communes. It's the best way to discover an off-the-beaten-track Lyon at your own pace.
20. Watch the sunset from the banks of the Saône
This is perhaps Lyon's most romantic free activity. The banks of the Saône, particularly between the Pont Bonaparte and the Pont de la Feuillée, offer a breathtaking spectacle at sunset. The golden light reflects on the water, the facades of Vieux-Lyon glow, and the silhouette of Fourvière is outlined against a rosy sky. It's free, it's beautiful, and it's the kind of moment that makes you happy to be in Lyon (or visiting it).

21. Discover the street art of the Guillotière district
The Guillotière district and its surroundings (7th arrondissement) have become a genuine open-air street art museum. Colourful graffiti, monumental murals and ephemeral works are hidden in the streets, passages and interior courtyards. It's a free and constantly evolving territory to explore, where every visit brings new discoveries. Look up, look in corners: the best works are often the most hidden.
Lyon's street art scene extends well beyond Guillotière. The Gerland, Part-Dieu and 8th arrondissement neighbourhoods also hold beautiful surprises. But the real secret is the covered passages: the Passage de l'Argue (the oldest), the Passage Thiaffait (a haven for designers) and the Passage de l'Hôtel-Dieu. Housed in a magnificent Renaissance mansion in Vieux-Lyon, the Gadagne Museum contains two museums in one: the Lyon History Museum and the World Puppet Museum (and yes, Guignol is from Lyon!). The museum is free on the first Sunday of the month, and its hanging garden, with views over the rooftops of Vieux-Lyon, is accessible for free all year round. A little-known gem.

24. Descend through the Jardins du Rosaire
The Jardins du Rosaire connect the Basilica of Fourvière to Vieux-Lyon via a leafy path dotted with statues, fountains and magnificent views of the city. 25. Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts (free on the first Sunday of the month)
Lyon's Musée des Beaux-Arts is one of France's largest museums, often nicknamed "the little Louvre". Housed in the former Palais Saint-Pierre on Place des Terreaux, it holds collections spanning from Egyptian antiquity to contemporary art, via the Impressionists and Flemish masters. The museum is free on the first Sunday of the month, and its interior cloister is a peaceful haven accessible for free all year round.
The cloister is actually one of Lyon's best-kept secrets: a French formal garden surrounded by Renaissance arcades, right in the city centre, where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the absolute quiet. 26. Enjoy the secret view at the Jardin des Curiosités
This is probably Lyon's best-kept viewpoint. Perched on the Fourvière hill, a short walk from the Saint-Just funicular, the Jardin des Curiosités is a small terraced park offering an absolutely breathtaking panoramic view of the city. You can see everything: the Presqu'île, the rooftops of Vieux-Lyon, the towers of Part-Dieu, the Alps in the background on a clear day… All from a quiet and uncrowded garden, far from the crowds of the Fourvière esplanade.
